Background of the Study
Forest conservation policies in Akamkpa Local Government Area, Cross River State, have significant implications for rural economic activities. These policies aim to balance environmental sustainability with economic development, often affecting communities that depend on forest resources for their livelihoods (Mbanugo, 2023). The conservation measures, which include restrictions on logging, reforestation programs, and sustainable resource management, are designed to preserve biodiversity while promoting eco-friendly economic practices (Udo, 2024). However, these policies sometimes conflict with local economic interests, as many rural inhabitants rely on forest products for income generation. The challenge lies in reconciling conservation goals with the immediate economic needs of local populations. Recent studies underscore the importance of integrating community-based approaches with policy enforcement to ensure that conservation efforts do not inadvertently hamper rural development (Eze, 2025). This study investigates the dual impact of forest conservation policies on both environmental sustainability and rural economic activities, focusing on the benefits and constraints experienced by local communities.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the environmental benefits of forest conservation policies in Akamkpa, rural communities face significant economic challenges due to restrictions on resource exploitation. Many households depend on forest products for their livelihoods, and conservation measures have led to reduced income and increased economic uncertainty (Okafor, 2024). The lack of alternative income sources and inadequate compensation mechanisms exacerbates the conflict between environmental objectives and local economic needs. This study seeks to clarify these challenges and identify measures that can harmonize conservation efforts with rural economic development.
Objectives of the Study:
• To assess the economic impact of forest conservation policies on rural communities.
• To analyze the balance between environmental sustainability and economic needs.
• To propose integrated strategies that support both conservation and rural development.
Research Questions:
• How do forest conservation policies affect the economic activities of rural communities in Akamkpa?
• What are the key challenges faced by communities due to these policies?
• What integrated measures can support both environmental sustainability and economic development?
Research Hypotheses:
• H1: Forest conservation policies significantly reduce income from forest-based activities.
• H2: Local communities experience economic hardship as a result of conservation restrictions.
• H3: Integrated community-based approaches can mitigate negative economic impacts.
Significance of the Study
This study provides essential insights into the economic implications of forest conservation policies on rural communities in Akamkpa. The findings will aid policymakers in designing balanced strategies that safeguard the environment while promoting sustainable economic development. By addressing conflicts between conservation and livelihoods, the study contributes to more equitable and effective policy formulation (Uche, 2023; Nwosu, 2025). The recommendations aim to enhance rural well-being and environmental sustainability.
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to evaluating the effects of forest conservation policies on rural economic activities in Akamkpa Local Government Area, Cross River State. It focuses exclusively on policy impacts, income changes, and community responses, excluding broader environmental or national policy issues. Data are sourced solely from local studies and community feedback.
